Case Study:
Secure File Transfer for the Printing Industry

Our client is a print shop that handles large printing accounts for major cooperations throughout Israel. The print shop transfers very large files such as billing information, reports and graphic layouts from the clients to the print shop.

Currently FASTCopy Server is deployed at the print shop, allowing it to communicate with an unlimited number of clients. (In such a scenario, no charge is rolled over to the client).

FASTCopy was introduced at a time when magnetic tapes where delivered to the Print Shop. Now all transfers are done in a secure, reliable and guaranteed method using FASTCopy.

The Need

Print shops are among the most prolific initiators of file transfers in the world. Servicing graphic designers on one hand and large cooperation on the other, print shops receive gigabyte size files on a daily basis.

Before FASTCopy was implemented, the print shop’s clients sent mission critical print jobs on hard media to the print shop. No telephone company, bank, credit card provider, gas company or any other data-conscious organization can afford to "lose" a single line of a client's bill. The print shop needed a comprehensive solution, offering simple, secure and reliable file transfer.

Issues to  Consider

Before deciding to migrate to electronic transfer, there were a number of issues to consider:

§         Simple installation on the client's side

§         Complete confidentiality of files arriving to a mutual location (server)

§         Configurable and controllable transfer

§         Simple administration

§         Scalability

§         Cross platform capability

§         Cost to the client

FASTCopy Server answered all of the above concerns and provided an immediate solution to all the client’s needs.

Implementation

The print shop simply installed FASTCopy Server on its external server (usually located in the DMZ) and provided all its client with FASTCopy Server's Free Client, thus allowing them to transfer files to the server. The print shop’s clients may also utilize the encryption, bandwidth control, compression, and recoverability features.

Clients that chose to transfer their material to the print shop with FASTCopy downloaded a FASTCopy Server client kit from SoftLink’s website. After installation, the client replaced the demo license, which is provided with the downloaded kit, with a “free client” license provided by the print shop. In a matter of minutes, the print shop’s client was ready to commence file transfer.

The print shop administrator can assign clients a virtual username/password, restrict a client to a specific area on the server, provide mutual authentication, etc.
